Petition – Marian Fletcher, Philip Tattersall, 28 January 2025

Local citizens move to usher in new legislation to protect the rights of residents living in tourist parks across Tasmania

Recent moves by residents of the northern town of Beauty Point have spearheaded the release of the recent Petition to introduce the new law.

Tasmania is the only state in the Commonwealth which does not have a law to define the legal obligations and rights of rentees, leasees, long term residents and owners of caravan and tourist parks. Such a legal framework would provide surety for all and make it unnecessary to enter into expensive and long-drawn-out litigation to define their rights and obligations.

This has become patently obvious recently where evictions by one park owner have been taken to the Supreme Court. Similarly, there have been disputes over a change of rules that allow eviction without cause which has caused extreme fear and stress among residents.

It is anticipated that the new law will open the way to a fairer outcomes for all.
