Storm Damages Wilderness Railway

Posted on

As wild weather across lutruwita/Tasmania has blasted the state, West Coast Wilderness Railway has reported storm damage to its railway.

The damage has impacted 20 metres of track outside of Strahan, forcing the Railway to cancel all scheduled passenger services from the harbourside town. Departures from Queenstown are not impacted and will proceed as planned.

While the Railway has plans to reopen the damaged section from next Monday 9 September, West Coast Wilderness Railway’s general manager, Ian Robertson is cautious.

“We are conscious of the ongoing weather forecast and our team’s safety as we work towards remediating the damaged section,” says Robertson.

“Passengers impacted by this cancellation have been offered an alternate, stationary audio experience at Regatta Point Station, or provided a full refund. We also urge anyone unable to travel on the Lynchford Express service due to road closures to make contact as soon as possible and arrange a refund.”

The announcement comes just two weeks after the Railway announced it will reopen a 3km section of its famous rack railway later this month. “The extension of the line to Rinadeena Saddle continues to be on track and we’re looking forward to offering longer journeys from Queenstown over spring and summer as planned,” says Robertson.
