Thug Nicked for Bus Attack

Posted on

Police say they have charged a youth with several offences including smashing a Metro bus windscreen.

The 15-year-old has been charged with several matters including burglary, motor vehicle stealing, damaging the windscreen of a Metro bus and stealing – with the value of stolen property exceeding $8,000.

Acting Inspector Jason Klug said the boy was arrested on Friday, after the bus windscreen was damaged at Old Beach on Thursday.

“Police work closely with Metro Tasmania and we take any matters that could affect the safety of drivers and passengers extremely seriously,” he said.

“Metro buses are equipped with numerous internal and external high-definition cameras, which means offenders can be quickly identified.”

The bus incident occurred on Jetty Road in Old Beach on Thursday afternoon, causing delays and leaving the driver shaken.

Metro bus drivers have reportedly taken to calling the projectiles ‘missiles’ due to the variety of objects thrown at buses, including rocks, bricks and even tools like axes and hammers.

The problem flared earlier this year and forced Metro to temporarily suspend services on Gagebrook routes – which pass through Old Beach – after 5pm.

In late July, Metro began a ‘staged reintroduction’ of evening services in the north-eastern shore area.

Anyone with further information about the damage incident is asked to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers Tasmania on 1800 333 000 or at crimestopperstas.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.
