Media release – Tasmanian Electoral Commission, 17 June 2024

Over 22,000 postal votes returned in Glenorchy City and Sorell by-elections

As Glenorchy City and Sorell councils enter the final days of polling in local government by-elections, 47% of postal voting packs have been returned to the TEC.

Further details on the return are available on the TEC website.

Electoral Commissioner Andrew Hawkey has encouraged anyone yet to vote to complete and return their ballot papers as soon as possible.

“Now that voting is compulsory for local government elections, I want to make sure everyone has their say and is not subject to a non-voter penalty after the election,” said Mr Hawkey.

It’s too late to post, but not too late to vote

Over the coming days, electors are advised to return their ballot pack in person, at their local council offices or the TEC’s Moonah office, if they want to ensure it is received by the deadline of 2 pm on Thursday 20 June.

Glenorchy City and Sorell electors who have not yet received their pack, or require a replacement, can collect one from their local council or the TEC office, where they can be completed and returned at the same time.
