Media release – Mayor Teeny Brumby, Burnie City Council, 23 May 2024

Community Recognition Award Winners

There are many in our community who achieve great things for Burnie but do so without seeking reward or recognition. They are the individuals who are the very essence of community spirit and Burnie City Council last night celebrated these people by hosting the Community Recognition Awards Event at Burnie Arts.

The deserving winners announced on the night were:
• Citizen of the Year: Maxine Cunningham
• Young Citizen of the Year: Russi Sturzaker
• Senior Citzen of the Year: Margaret Lesson
• Event of the Year: SeaFM’s Fire on the Foreshore (Chloe Foster)
• Volunteer of the Year: Dane Febey

The event was also an opportunity to recognise our tremendous Burnie City Council volunteers who have reached important milestones.

As Mayor Teeny Brumby said, “In particular, I want to take an opportunity to celebrate a number of our volunteers who have achieved considerable milestones in their volunteering efforts. Some Burnie City Council volunteers have been undertaking their tireless efforts for 10 years, 15 years and would you believe 20 years!”

The individual stories of our winners, plus a selection of photographs taken on the night, including photos of our longest serving volunteers, can be viewed on the Burnie City Council website here: www.burnie.tas.gov.au/Council/News/2024/Community-Recognition-Award-Winners
