Dean Winter Reported to Fancy Labor Leadership
Labor’s Dean Winter to seek leadership after party’s election loss under Rebecca White in Tasmania
Tasmanian Labor frontbencher Dean Winter has put his hand up to lead the party following its fourth straight election defeat.
Labor won just 29.2 per cent of the primary vote at Saturday’s state election, a 1 per cent increase on a 2021 campaign marred by infighting and scandals.
Leader Rebecca White conceded defeat on Sunday after initially appearing to leave the door open to govern in minority, with the party set to win just 10 or 11 seats in parliament.
Ms White has said she’ll take time with her family to consider her future after the loss, the third under her leadership.
She did not respond to a request for comment on Monday, but MPs expect she’ll decide to stand down.
The ABC understands Mr Winter has told his colleagues he’ll contest the leadership.

Do you know what, I’ve worked for Rebecca White for four years and what’s happened to her and how she’s been treated by her own party makes me sick. She would’ve made an excellent Premier.
Tasmania and Tasmanians are the losers here.
And I’m not prepared to pretend otherwise anymore on behalf of anyone because Bec was and is one of the most decent people I’ve ever met.
I’m devastated for her and for Tasmanians who would’ve benefited from her being premier instead of Michael Ferguson or Eric Abetz.
Because if you think for five seconds Jeremy will remain premier, you’re delusional.
And to be equally clear for people who are still questioning her, Rebecca did not give up. She is not a coward and she is not gutless. She would’ve been there and done it all if she hadn’t been treated so badly and taken out behind the scenes.
My disgust knows no bounds.
To the contrary, Rebecca White is a fabulous woman who has worked so hard to represent not just other women but just people…and make their lives better.
I’ve been proud to work for her.
I will miss working for and with her.
And I will just miss her.
Seriously, I wrote this initially to stop people blaming the woman who did all the right things…and got done over anyway.
Please read this entire thread and stop blaming the woman who did all the right things and got done over anyway.

I took umbrage throughout White’s speech on election night as she honoured ‘The Movement’. The presenting issue for Tas Labor currently is that it has walked so far away from ‘The Movement’ and in doing so entangled itself with identity politics and individualism.
‘The Movement’ has always been about working people standing together and representing working people. Workers for Workers. Unfortunately for Tasmania, they walked away from this commitment ideologically and therefore have suffered.
They’ve shown little understanding of the collective with White’s acolytes focusing on self-preservation and promotion at all costs. Its led to a party bereft of opinion, position and policy and despite the best chance to win in decades could only manage a meagre vote
I hope for the sake of Tasmanian workers that the powers can work together to get their house in order.
