Mental Health First Aid Program continues to assist industry

The Tasmanian Hospitality Association (THA) recognises World Mental Health Day, and continues to play an integral role in supporting industry with its Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Program. The program, now in its second year, is a nation leading initiative and has been instrumental in providing crucial mental health support to Tasmanian hospitality businesses, reaffirming THA’s commitment to the wellbeing of the sector.

The program, launched last year, was a proactive response to the growing awareness of the unique challenges faced by hospitality professionals. Recognising that the demanding nature of this industry can take a toll on mental health, THA made it a priority to equip industry with the tools to address these issues effectively.

In 2023 the program has not only gained momentum but has also expanded its reach. More hospitality venues across Tasmania, particularly in regional areas, have embraced the Mental Health First Aid training, further fostering a supportive and empathetic environment within the industry.

“We are immensely proud of the impact our Mental Health First Aid Program has had within the Tasmanian hospitality sector,” THA mental health ambassador Carl Windsor said.

“With the funding we have received from the State Government we have been able to deliver MHFA to even more hospitality venues across the state, with courses held on the north west and east coasts, and today we are delivering a course on the west coast. Early next month we are also running a course in Hobart.

“Having spent time around the state visiting venues, we are not only promoting the programs and support the THA offer in the mental health space, but we are also starting to gain a real understanding of the mental health literacy of the Tasmanian hospitality industry, which is helping us to tailor and improve the support we offer to keep us as the national leaders in mental health support.”

The program offers comprehensive training to hospitality staff, enabling them to recognise signs of mental distress in colleagues and patrons and provide immediate support. In addition, it emphasises the importance of self-care and destigmatising mental health issues within the workplace.

Over the past year, THA has seen an increase in the number of venues reporting a positive change in their work culture and an enhanced ability to address mental health concerns. The testimonials from program participants have been heartening, with many acknowledging the positive impact it has had on their daily operations.

“Our commitment to the mental wellbeing of our industry professionals remains unwavering, and the positive response we’ve received fuels our determination to continue this vital work,” THA chief executive Steve Old said.

“As we celebrate the second year of this program, we are grateful for the support and dedication across the industry and together, we are fostering an environment where mental health is a priority, and where everyone feels safe and supported.”
