Consultations on National Autism Strategy
Media release – Autism Tasmania, 21 September 2023
NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE AUTISM A PRIORITY
Consultation to shape Australia’s first Autism Strategy starts in Tasmania next week. Let’s hear what autistic Tasmanians have to say.
With one in four Tasmanian families impacted by autism in some way it is now time to act:
-
There is a 20-year gap in life expectancy compared with the general population.
-
Autistic people are 7 times more likely to be unemployed than other people.
-
Autistic people have a higher risk of homelessness.
There is a growing number of Australians with autism. It’s time for autistic people to be heard and for outcomes to be improved in key areas such as education, services access, health and mental health and employment.
This is why the Australian Government has committed to develop our first National Autism Strategy. Finally… after much anticipation, the consultation will start. For Tasmanians it starts Monday 25 September 2023.
There are many ways for autistic Tasmanians and everyone who is involved to have their say and shape this vital strategy.
Autism Tasmania is pleased to work the Australian Government to host a range of options for deep and meaningful grass-roots community engagement with the Tasmanian autism community during this consultation period.
The government is listening and the time to be heard is now!
