Applications Now Open for Career Firefighter Positions with Tasmania Fire Service

Applications are now open for career firefighter positions with Tasmania Fire Service (TFS), offering people the opportunity to serve their community and keep Tasmanians safe.

Acting Chief Officer Jeremy Smith said becoming a firefighter is more than just a job.

“Firefighting is about more than just extinguishing fires; it’s about serving our communities and providing support in times of crisis,” he said.

“It’s a calling to protect and assist the people of Tasmania during their times of need.”

“We are looking for people with strong personal values who are keen on a career of lifelong learning and development, and who demonstrate unwavering dedication and a strong sense of duty.”

“While the physical aspect of the selection process is necessarily challenging and may be daunting for some people, it is achievable for people with a good level of strength, fitness and motivation.”

With multiple positions available in both Hobart and Launceston, this recruitment effort will keep firefighter numbers strong as others reach retirement.

The recruit course, scheduled to start in April 2024, will provide comprehensive training to equip new firefighters with the necessary skills and knowledge to respond effectively to a wide range of emergency situations including structure fires, bushfires and road crashes.

“We do not expect people to be experienced firefighters when they start the course,” Mr Smith said.

“Recruit firefighters are put through their paces across many different areas, and the training they receive ensures they are job ready when they graduate.”

“The recruit course is designed to prepare our new team members for the challenges they may face on the frontline by learning from experienced professionals.”
