Media release – Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, 3 March 2023
Public submissions welcome for Maria Island Rediscovered project – Stage 3
The Maria Island Rediscovered project is making progress, with the public now invited to have their say on Stage 3 of the project.
Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) invites public submissions on the proposed Maria Island Critical Infrastructure Upgrades – Stage 3. PWS Acting Deputy Secretary Will Joscelyne said the proposed works will deliver upgrades to the critical infrastructure in Darlington, providing essential services that meet contemporary environmental and safety standards.
“The Stage 3 proposal provides for a new wastewater treatment facility and connecting infrastructure, including new water and electrical connections to existing serviced buildings and future proofing the water supply to Darlington,” Mr Joscelyne said.
Stages 1 and 2 of the project delivered a number of upgrades to the pressure sewer system infrastructure for the Darlington precinct and service corridors. Stage 2 also saw the completion of pressure sewer system reticulation works for the public amenities on the island, reopening of the jetty toilets and completion of a new solar array and battery storage system to provide a sustainable energy supply for the island. Completion of Stage 3 works will see the final connections of critical infrastructure works completed in Stages 1 and 2.
“Once complete, the critical infrastructure delivered through the Maria Island Rediscovered project will facilitate sustainable visitation to the Island into the future and protect the natural, cultural, historic, and recreational values of this special place,” Mr Joscelyne said.
