Contra Dance Introduction and Workshop
Calling all new-comers and experienced dancers of all styles!
Do you keep wondering what this contra dancing is? Have you been once or twice but would like to develop your skills?
Maybe you dance it often but don’t get chance to learn those ‘extra’ bits that some people do….We’ve got something for all dancers at our:
CONTRA DANCE INTRO AND WORKSHOP
Contra dancing is a lively, social dance style from the USA which is moderately aerobic and highly addictive. Done to simple walking steps, it features flowing movements, swings and twirls, a chance to dance with everyone and the opportunity for improvisation (flourishes).
Live music by Ross Smithard and Up Jumped Trouble.
The workshop will be lead by experienced dance callers Sarah ‘Twinkletoes’ Lewis and David ‘Oddsocks’ Wanless, as a preview of workshops they’ll be presenting at the National Folk Festival.
Workshop: Sunday, 26 March, 13:45 for 14-16:00
St James Hall, 462 Elizabeth St, New Town (off Rupert Ave, enter behind church)
Tickets: $7-20 at https://folktas.org/
We’ll cover the basics of contra formations whilst learning how partner connection works, the importance of stretch and bounce, how to use your partner’s stretch and energy and more. These foundational skills will be applied to a variety of common contra moves and embellishments so that dancers can understand and appreciate how these skills add to enjoyment of the dance for everyone.
All dances taught. No dancing experience or partner required. The workshop will be valuable to both new and existing contra dancers. and will interest dancers of other styles.
We have regular contra dances on the first and third Monday of each month, so you can put your new found skills from the workshop into practice at the dance on Monday 3 April.
