Are you storing workplace chemicals correctly?
Chemicals can cause burns and contact dermatitis, injuries to the eyes and respiratory system, and poisoning. So it’s important to use, store and handle chemicals in your workplace correctly and safely.
Some of the vital steps for managing chemicals include:
-
- getting the safety data sheets for each chemical from your supplier or manufacturer. These explain safe handling procedures, first aid, and precautions for use
- keeping chemicals in their original containers with the labels intact, as labels also contain important safety information and warnings
- working out the first aid requirements to deal with a spill or other incident, and having that equipment close at hand
- storing chemicals safely, away from ignition sources and incompatible chemicals, in secure and ventilated sheds
- creating a register and a site plan to help first responders deal with an emergency at your workplace.
