Media release – Tasmanian Small Business Council, 6 September 2022

Now is the time to get the Local Government you want

Tasmania is one of the only jurisdictions in Australia where business owners have little excuse for not doing their utmost to ensure the politicians they want, are elected.

The mechanism is the General Managers Roll where everybody who is a ratepayer, through any means or proxy, may enrol to vote in their local government elections.

This enables a business owner in Hobart to vote for the Hobart City Council even though they may live in the West Tamar.

Also, you may live in Glamorgan Spring Bay and own a business in the same municipality, you may vote twice; but only twice.

A very small number of business owners take up this option which is disappointing given that in many of our more populous municipalities, businesses pay a significantly higher dollar amount of rates compared to the other residential ratepayers.

The rolls close at 6pm this Thursday 8th September and it is very easy to enrol. Go to the Tasmanian Electoral Commission website, download the form and when completed, return it (email is fine) to the relevant local government area office.

Do not delay. If you want a local government to support your business, your future and the broader Tasmanian economy, this is a positive way of making it happen.
