History

The Bellerive Community Arts Centre was designed in 1838 as the watch house for Clarence Plains. It was built in 1842.

Between 1860 and 1929, the watch house doubled as the chambers for the Clarence City Council.

In 1930, a new police station was built next-door to the watch house, which became the Clarence Public Library. It closed when the Rosny Library was built in 1960.

The building became an arts and crafts centre following the Tasman Bridge disaster in 1975. It has remained an arts and crafts centre ever since.
