Tweed Ride Returns

Posted on

Cycling enthusiasts, tweed wearers and cultural historians will come together on 5 September for Junction Arts Festival’s annual Tweed Ride.

A Junction tradition, the Tweed Ride is a spectacle for all to see, and much-enjoyed by everyone involved. The event invites you to dress up in your best tweed outfit, bring along your bike and ride through the historic streets of Launceston with a flock of 50+ well-dressed community members.

Supported by Tamar Bicycle Users Group (TBUG), the event is well-known for attracting the very best vintage bikes and penny farthings, as well as some iconic outfits of yesteryear.

“Since the inaugural ride in 2014, Junction has played host to the annual Tweed Ride, a non-competitive fun ride for the whole family that features tweed-wearing aficionados riding vintage bicycles around the city’s historic landmarks,” said Junction’s Artistic Director, Greg Clarke.

“Onlookers enjoy the spectacle and it’s a great gathering of the local community – you would think you had stepped back 100 years; it’s quite the sight. It’s like an episode of Call The Midwife meets Dads’ Army and everyone is on bicycles wearing tweed woollens, tartan bow ties and dapper suits of yesteryear,” he added.

A Sunday tradition at the festival, this year’s Tweed Ride falls on Fathers’ Day, and organisers are inviting families to join the fun.

“It’s a wonderfully iconic Launceston event for all the family and all levels,” said TBUG’s Malcolm Reid.

“Its a real opportunity to show off Launceston’s historical and current bike culture, dress up, and have a bit of fun.”

After the ride, participants can enjoy a complimentary morning tea, followed by a parade of the best tweed kits. The best dressed rider will take home a medal for their efforts, but everyone goes home a winner.
