9 Arrested at Extinction Rebellion Action in Launceston
Nine people were arrested when they remained on the street after a World Environment Day event in Launceston today.
They were charged with failing to comply with a direction of a police officer.
The arrests took place after an Extinction Rebellion march from City Park to Civic Square. A rally then took place, with prior permission from Tasmania Police, in St Johns St between Cameron and Paterson Sts.
The nine ranged from youth activists to grandparents.
All were bailed to appear in the magistrate’s court in Launceston on 14 July.
Among those arrested were refugee volunteer and advocate Gwen Woods, Tasmanian Wilderness Society volunteer coordinator Steve Saunders, and Ros Lewis, recently inducted to the Tasmanian Women’s Roll of Honour.
The event featured the debut of the ‘Sibyls’, drawing on the tradition of the prophets and oracles of ancient Greece.
