COVID-19 may have reduced the amount of traffic on Tasmanian roads during 2020, but Tasmania’s speed cameras continued to rack up thousands of infringements.

The island’s most effective speed camera in 2020 racked up more than twice as many infringements as the second highest.

Tasmania has ten fixed speed cameras, with the top five of these accounting for more than 4,500 infringements in total during 2020. Police say their locations are based on several criteria, including a high number of traffic incidents, a high speed limit and a high volume of traffic.

The top five speed camera locations in Tasmania during 2020:

  1. Bass Highway, East Devonport, with 1907 infringements
  2. Brooker Highway, Rosetta, with 849 infringements
  3. Tasmanian Bridge (eastern side), with 825 infringements
  4. Southern Outlet, Tolmans Hill, with 618 infringements
  5. Tasmanian Bridge (western side), with 341 infringements
