Bicycle Network is asking Tasmanians to swap a car trip for walking, riding or public transport this Wednesday 26 August to raise awareness about our transport emissions.

“Park it for the Planet is asking Tasmanians to consider walking, riding or taking public transport instead of driving their car for at least one trip on Wednesday,” Tasmanian Public Affairs Manager Alison Hetherington said.

“Driving an average size car emits about 244 grams of carbon dioxide for every kilometre driven. This quickly adds up – a regular work commute of 9 km each way emits more than 1 tonne of CO2 every year.

“If you have the ability and access to a bike, riding the same distance means you get in your recommended daily activity while reducing your carbon footprint.

“Park it for the Planet is being run in support of the ABC’s Fight for Planet A series which identifies some of the easiest ways we can cut our carbon dioxide emissions.

“By pledging even a short trip on the Park it for the Planet carbon calculator you can see how short trips made by lots of people soon add up to significant emission totals.

“And every Tasmanian who pledges on our website goes into the running to win a Jamis Renegade bicycle donated by Hobart Rotary Club,” Ms Hetherington said.

Transport makes up 19% of Tasmania’s emissions and close to half of that is from cars (not including land use emissions).

In Hobart on Wednesday 26 August
  • Park it for the Planet social ride

Austins Ferry (7.30 am) to Mawsons Place (8.30 am) with stops at Berriedale, Glenorchy and New Town. Each stop is identified by the number of kilograms of CO2 saved by riding instead of driving.

  • Mawsons Place

7.30–9.30 am, the Bicycle Network team will be talking to people riding and walking past to let them know how much CO2 they have saved by choosing active transport, providing pedal-powered smoothies, and displaying the bicycle donated by Hobart Rotary for one lucky Tasmanian who pledges their trip on our carbon calculator.
