Launceston Airport – the Airport is interested in understanding what travel looks like to you once the COVID-19 travel restrictions are lifted. They are collecting views via an online survey which takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. People completing the survey will be eligible for a prize draw. You can find the survey here.

Huon Highway at Sandfly – final consultation is now open for a revised concept design for critical safety upgrades at the Huon Highway/Sandfly Road intersection. The revised design was developed following community consultation on the initial concept design in July 2019. The design has been reconfigured to address the issues of confusion in the centre of the intersection and obscured driver vision raised during the consultation process. The revised concept design aims to improve road safety and provide safer bus and freight transport movements at the intersection.
The design includes:

  • Elongated and widened medians to provide room for buses and trucks to wait safely;
  • A new slip lane;
  • Relocation of an existing slip lane and the uphill overtaking lane;
  • Improved pedestrian, cycle and car parking facilities;
  • Better access to bus stops; and
  • Improved lighting through the intersection.

Consultation is open until 5pm on Friday 31 July. The community will be able to provide feedback online, through an interactive map. More information is available here.

CAT Curatorial – the Contemporary Arts Tasmania Curatorial Mentorship is now open for applications. The program offers $3000 towards professional development and exhibition research. The negotiated exhibition and publication outcomes are funded separately through CAT’s exhibition program. Curatorial applications can be experimental, ambitious or imaginary. The mentored curator gains experience in all aspects of developing a public exhibition and producing an exhibition catalogue. As part of this mentorship the recipient also sits on the CAT Program Committee and gains invaluable insight and experience in the processes that determine the CAT exhibition program. Applications for the 2021 Mentorship are due on 3 August 2020. For more information, including selection criteria and past recipients, please see the CAT website.

Public Guardian – the position of Public Guardian will be advertised in the coming weeks, to allow adequate time for a recruitment process to be completed, following the resignation of Kim Barker. She has held the position of Public Guardian since September 2015 and will cease her tenure on 13 November 2020. The Attorney-General’s office said that the new Public Guardian appointed will work alongside Barker for a period of time to ensure a seamless transition.

ABC – Tasmanian Times does not take an editorial stance on most things, preferring to allow Tasmanians to speak in all their diversity. We are not the only ones who facilitate this, hence we are concerned about any threats to the breadth and integrity of media operating in Tasmania. This includes the ABC. The federal government recently announced changes to indexation of ABC funding which effectively amount to cuts to ABC operations. These will in time affect Tasmania and we do not think that is healthy for our state. We need a viable and vibrant media sector in Tasmania across both non-profit and commercial enterprises.
The Media Entertainment Arts Alliance are holding a national day of action regarding the ABC cuts on Monday 6 July. You can read more about it here.
