No risk to drinking water from highland lakes metal claims
The health of the public is TasWater’s highest priority and we carry out rigorous testing of all water supplied to our customers.
Concerns have been raised over the potential for metal contamination from sediments in Tasmanian highland lakes due to historic mining activity. Claims have also been made that windborne metal particles may have contributed to these sediments which could compromise drinking water quality.
TasWater has reviewed our data for the systems and catchments that include these lakes and we do not have concerns for drinking water quality as a result of claimed contamination.
Even if sediments found their way into raw water sources used by TasWater, our treatment processes and water quality management regimes would ensure no contaminants would enter the water supply.
The community can be assured Tasmanian drinking water meets Australian Drinking Water Guidelines and is safe.
