Undermined: Tales from the Kimberley
The Amnesty International Australia Redfern group is extending a warm welcome to supporters and the
wider community interested in attending a screening of the new Australian film ‘Undermined: Tales from
the Kimberley’.
‘Undermined: Tales from the Kimberley’ will be released in cinemas early next year. This early special
screening is a fantastic opportunity to educate and provide a greater understanding of the realities which
are becoming increasingly pressing for this part of the world and its proud, strong people.
The screening will be hosted on the 11th of December, with doors opening at 5:30pm for a 6pm start,
with light refreshments provided and an expected finish time of approximately 9pm.
In this new film, award-winning director Nicholas Wrathall (Gore Vidal: The United States of
Amnesia) investigates the cost of development in the Kimberley region, where mining, farming and
irrigated agriculture development pose a threat to not only the environment but more than 200 remote
Indigenous communities and their peoples’ connection to Country. With the 10th of December being the
70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, this is a fitting time to be looking into
the Human Rights of those affected by the film, and a great way to investigate the effects which are had
within this region. As the government aspires to make this region the “future economic powerhouse of
Australia” this film questions what this means for the Kimberley’s traditional custodians, land, culture and
the future of these communities.
Amnesty’s Redfern Group Convenor Sabine Kacha said: “The Kimberley region has breathtaking riches
of natural beauty, First Nations people’s culture and resources. It is these resources which humans seek to
profit from in the form of minerals.
The film dives into the depths of how the region’s riches are at times in opposition to one another.
Audiences will be drawn into its beauty through the film’s fantastic cinematography while engaging with
its both challenging and intriguing narrative.”
The screening will also feature a Q&A with director Nicholas Wrathall, a further opportunity for the
audience to gain insight from someone with a vast expanse of knowledge and experience about issues
facing the Kimberley region.
Amnesty International encourages members of the public interested in attending to register as soon as
possible to ensure their seat.
