Summer on hold as rain hits the state from Thursday
• Mostly sunny across the state today with maximum temperatures averaging 23–26 °C.
• Late drizzle in the north before rain and possible thunderstorms develop near King Island late in the evening.
• Rain will fall across Tasmania from Thursday, especially in the north and west (with possible storms in the north west), as a trough lingers over the state and a low intensifies over Victoria.
• Rainfall totals of 20–30 mm forecast on Thursday for King Island, 5–15 mm for the north and west, less than 2 mm elsewhere.
• Heavy rain is possible Friday to Sunday night as a result of a low-pressure system over Victoria that slowly moves south over Tasmania from early Sunday. Current three-day rainfall totals forecast from Friday to Sunday are:
o 50–100 mm for the north west – mainly coastal areas
o 100–200 mm in the north east
o 50–80 mm across the Bass Strait Islands.
• Current three-day totals (Fri to Sun) of 20–40mm are expected in Hobart and Launceston.
• The heaviest falls are expected to fall on Saturday, with thunderstorms enhancing rainfall in the north east.
• Flooding may develop over the weekend. Minor to moderate flooding is possible in multiple catchments with the highest risk in the north of the state.
• Heavy rain may also lead to localised flash flooding over the weekend.
