Hobart Not Highrise – Absolute Maximum Heights
The City of Hobart Planning Committee has recommended an absolute maximum height limit of 45 metres (around 15 storeys) in the inner city area. This is in line with Hobart Not Highrises’s campaign for a cap on height limits. It defends and confirms the current preferred limit in the central area of the CBD.
We believe that the Council members have listened to the community (our petition with over 7,000 signatures, a number of packed public meetings, numerous deputations, extensive media coverage, etc) to protect Hobart as a low-rise heritage city. A CBD with lots of high-rise towers means lots of shadowing, wind, and heritage buildings that are overwhelmed.
Claims are being made by some vested interests that high-rise buildings will deliver the world, with no evidence provided. Low-rise heritage cities are the ‘gems’ of the world.
There are numerous opportunities for more housing within the recommended heights; with government help, some of this could be kept affordable.
The full Council will debate the recommended absolute height limits this coming Monday.
Hobart Not Highrise supports the Planning Committee’s recommendation. We understand that there’s a lot of ‘activity’ happening behind the scenes at the moment.
We ask that you send an email to all Aldermen / Councillors letting them know how you feel. If you agree with the Planning Committee’s recommendations, now is a good time to let your Councillors know! This single email address will reach all Aldermen & Councillors: AldermenGroupContactsPublic@hobartcity.com.au
Thanks for your support.
