FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Titles: Otto the Otter’s Muddy Puddle
Yapper the Unhappy Snapper
Author: Chez Rafter’s Rubbish Rebellion series
Children’s author Chez Rafter is targeting environmental warriors of the future, in her book series created to raise awareness about the plight of wildlife struggling to survive in littered waterways.
The series, aptly titled Rubbish Rebellion, is the author’s response to litter plaguing marine habitats worldwide, including the canals and seaways near her home on Queensland’s Gold Coast.
A nature lover and keen kayaker, Chez says she is horrified by the amount of rubbish, particularly plastic, she sees when out on the water, and is deeply concerned about the impact on unsuspecting wildlife. Wherever possible she pulls items into her kayak for safe disposal when back on shore, but despairs at the scale of the problem and knows much more needs to be done.
“This litter problem is such a huge issue and the message needs to get out there to raise awareness about the harm being done, and we must take action to combat it.”
As an author who’s always written about children and the environment, Chez says she decided her best course was to combine the two subjects in a book series that would help youngsters learn about the importance of protecting the environment and safeguarding wildlife .
Chez believes children are the environmental warriors of the future, and says the oldest of her four young grandsons is already responding to the anti-litter message in the books. “When he sees rubbish in the water or on the ground, he reacts. He says, ‘it should be in the bin’ and wants to pick it up.”
The Rubbish Rebellion series, comprising two titles Otto the Otter’s Muddy Puddle and Yapper the Unhappy Snapper, features a cast of wildlife characters and the dangers posed by rubbish discarded in their habitats. Fortunately, quick action on the part of the bespoke heroes saves the day for this colourful cast.
Chez says despite the serious message her stories convey, they are written in a “comical way” to ensure she captures the attention of her young readers. These are the first two books in the series; more are in the pipeline.
Determined to spread the word far and wide about the world’s increasingly littered waterways, Chez also has linked up with like-minded community groups and individuals on Instagram and other social media. She hopes too that her books, available in bookstores and online, will soon be on the shelves of school libraries to ensure her message reaches as many potential environmental warriors as possible.
