CALL FOR GOV’T TO STOP POINT SCORING AND RETURN TO THE TABLE
Advocacy group, Transforming Tasmania, has urged the State Government to return to the table and discuss overdue gender law reforms, instead of point-scoring on the issue.
The Attorney-General, Elise Archer, today claimed a proposal to allow families greater choice about whether gender is indicated on birth certificates is the result of a “secretive backroom deal” between Labor and the Greens.
Spokesperson, Martine Delaney, said,
“There is nothing ‘secret’ about this proposal because Transforming Tasmania has met the Attorney-General to discuss it several times and draft amendments have been on her desk since May.”
“This reform is about Tasmanians who are vulnerable to prejudice and discrimination, so I urge Elise Archer to refrain from political point-scoring and come back to the table so we can work together to move these reforms forward.”
Ms Delaney said there continues to be a misconception that the proposed reform will see gender “erased” from birth certificates when, in fact, families will have a choice about whether gender is included.
“This reform gives families greater choice about what appears on birth certificates, not less.”
