Potentially damaging winds Friday and Saturday
- Northwesterly winds are expected to reach around 60 km/h today with strong northwesterly to westerly gusts potentially reaching 90-100 km/h in the west and south west this evening.
- Saturday will see strong gusty winds continue for most of the day, with peak gusts potentially reaching 90-100 km/h in the western and southern areas of the state by late afternoon.
- A Severe Weather Warning may be issued this afternoon for land gusts occurring Friday night until Saturday afternoon. The warning will be posted at bom.gov.au/tas/warnings/ if required.
- A Gale Warning is current for coastal areas.
- Parts of the east and south east have Very High fire danger ratings today due to low humidity and strengthening northwesterly winds – Tasmania Fire Service has issued a fire permit embargo: fire.tas.gov.au/Show?pageId=colMediaReleases#59653
- Thunderstorms are clearing to the northeast by this afternoon – around 10,000 lightning strikes were detected overnight with Thursday’s thunderstorms.
- Friday will see showers for most of the state with 10-20 mm forecast in the north and west, although 25-35 mm is possible in elevated areas, and 2-10 mm elsewhere.
- Hail is possible Friday evening into early Saturday morning.
- A Bushwalkers Alert is current for the western and central plateaus as the snowline is expected to lower to 700 metres late Friday and 600 metres early Saturday before rising during the day.
- Settled conditions are expected on Sunday.
