Foreign minister Marise Payne flew to Jakarta to meet her Indonesian counterpart Retno Marsudi on Tuesday, while the Council of Arab Ambassadors will release a statement today asking Australia to clarify its position. Two days before Morrison’s announcement, Marsudi walked alongside Palestinian foreign minister Riyad al Maliki on the Walk for Peace and Humanity, a pro-Palestine demonstration in Jakarta.

“As the number of deportees has mounted, so too has the death toll. In the past three years, at least four New Zealand citizens have died in Australian custody or immediately following deportation, and researchers believe there are almost certainly more. The New Zealand government has no estimate of the total number of deaths, and Minister of Justice Andrew Little says his office is powerless to force a change in Australian law.”

“As the hours pass, Perez and I watch the girl’s body bob facedown in the water and discuss Perez’s experience working as a journalist during this administration. Fixers like Perez are often in danger, facing death threats and more for exposing what an oppressive regime wants to hide. Her connection to her job is more than financial; like many journalists in Manila, she has been a victim of the same brutal policies she helps to cover.”

“Neilsen was staring at a ghost, a bird that the world had written off as extinct. The fact that it was less than a year old meant that there were more out there and they were breeding. The last time anyone collected a living Night Parrot, Australia was still a British dominion and the primary mode of transportation in the Outback was the one-humped camel. That was in 1912.”

“The Channel Seven Sunrise panel was left stunned after host David Koch appeared to make a ‘joke’ about slavery during a segment on Jamaican-born athlete Usain Bolt … Koch took to Twitter to clarify his comment and said it was a reference he used for sportsmen and women who ‘want to trade clubs or change jobs in sport’ that clubs can’t keep them.”

“Pauline Hanson loves a soapbox, and breakfast hosts David Koch and Samantha Armytage wheeled one out for her routinely in the months and weeks heading into Saturday’s election. The controversial Queenslander was not only afforded a platform for her messages but news.com.au can confirm she was being paid to appear in the living rooms of Australians.”

“‘Everyone’s telling you that you should be ashamed of your white features’, Hanson whispered to the millennia-old natural wonder. ‘Don’t listen to them. It’s beautiful. If people want to stop coming here on holiday that’s their fault.’”
