Red Alert for Tassie Salmon

Posted on

The news that Tasmanian salmon has been downgraded to a Red “Say-No” rating in the Australian Marine Conservation Society’s Australia’s Sustainable Seafood Guide is further evidence that the industry urgently needs to clean up its act.

This is not a decision AMCS would have taken lightly. The Tasmanian salmon industry needs to be genuinely sustainable and the only way that will happen is if all three big producers step up and take steps to improve their practices. Both the Liberal and Labor parties need to stop kowtowing to the salmon industry and understand that if they genuinely care about jobs, then they need to have policies to remedy the industry.

The salmon industry has a bright future but it will only survive and grow, and its workforce protected, if it’s put on a genuinely sustainable footing. Yes some improvements have been made in some areas, and Huon Aquaculture is to be commended for achieving RSPCA approval for some of its products. However the industry generally remains beset with problems and Macquarie Harbour is particularly problematic.
