Cumulus Studio’s reimagination of Castray Point has been recognised alongside
leading international public sector design projects, winning a Silver Prize in the
2018 DesignxDriven Government Design Awards.
The new vision for Castray Point, commissioned by Destination Southern
Tasmania and Tourism Industry Council Tasmania earlier this year, features a
series of new ideas to activate and enhance the site currently occupied by
CSIRO Laboratories.
With designs including a year round market, maritime museum and the evercontroversial
water-edge swimming pool, the proposal has helped spark a
productive discussion about the future of public spaces in Hobart.
Competing in the Mixed Use category, the new vision for Castray Point joined
internationally significant projects such as the transformation of Oxford Street by
Transport for London, and the Gold Prize winning Sydney Metro Martin Place
designed by Grimshaw, Johnson Pilton Walker and Tzannes Architects.
Cumulus Studio Director and Principal Architect Peter Walker described the
award as a big win for public design in Tasmania.
“We are thrilled to see this project gain recognition on an international platform,”
said Mr Walker
“The Silver prize reflects the significance of the proposed development and the
continued need to present ambitious ideas within the public sphere.
“We would like to thank Destination Southern Tasmania and TICT for this
opportunity and look forward to continuing the conversation on the future of this
important Tasmanian Location.”
Cumulus Studio will be presented with the Silver Prize at the Official
DesignxDriven Awards presentation in Sydney on November 13 this year.
