Code of Conduct vote a win for democracy
• Significant win for Labor, with Parliamentary Code of Conduct implemented this year
• Labor has been calling for Parliamentary Code of Conduct for more than four years
• Vote comes amid serious concerns about Michael Ferguson’s conduct
Labor has secured a significant victory, with the Government committing to implement a Code of Conduct for all members of Parliament before the end of the year.
Tasmania is currently the only state or territory in Australia without a Code of Conduct for members of Parliament.
It comes amid serious concerns about the conduct and the complaint handling process surrounding Health Minister Michael Ferguson regarding the Angela Williamson matter.
“Today’s vote is a win for democracy,” Labor Leader Rebecca White said.
“Labor has been calling for a Parliamentary Code of Conduct for more than four years, including putting forward a similar motion which was opposed by the Liberals just last year.
“Currently is it too easy for the Government to just stonewall on behalf of a Minister like Michael Ferguson and not hold members to account.
“Today’s vote is a demonstration that the Parliament expects higher standards from elected members.”
