The Briefing … Sunday penalty rates cut

Hospitality, retail, fast food and pharmacy workers have worked their first weekend since reduced Sunday penalty rates came into effect on July 1.

Under penalty rate cuts passed by the federal government in 2017, up to 700,000 workers lost between 10 and 15 per cent of Sunday penalty rates depending on their industry and type of employment. Labor and unions hit out at the changes at the weekend, with Australian Council of Trade Unions secretary Sally McManus saying the cuts were evidence that “we are going backwards as a country …”
