The Briefing … ‘I can’t breathe’
Good morning, and welcome to The Briefing.
An inquest into the death in custody of Dunghutti man David Dungay Jr has released video footage of five custodial officers violently restraining him in his cell shortly before he died.
The footage shows Dungay repeatedly saying “I can’t breathe” and pleading with officers as they press him face-down onto his mattress and the floor, and depicts officers saying “stop spitting your blood and you might be alright” and “you’re the one who brought this upon yourself, Dungay”.
