Statement on Southwood Fibre
The Government supports both aquaculture and forestry and remains strongly committed to achieving a southern residues solution to support jobs in the forest industry.
Unfortunately discussions between the two industries have been unable to find a mutually agreeable way forward for the Southwood Fibre loading facility to proceed at the Lomas Point site, near Dover.
We will always welcome job creating private sector proposals, such as this initiative, and the Government will continue to work with the Neville Smith group and the wider industry on a way forward.
The Government supports our salmon industry and our forestry industry.
We work with all industry sectors to help them grow and create jobs.
The Department of State Growth has been tasked with examining all options for a southern residues solution. DSG has commissioned long-standing forestry leader Mr Evan Rolley, who is also a former TasPorts board member, to assist the investigation of strategic options.
The Department has been asked to expedite the investigation as a matter of priority.
