On Wednesday 18th July, Family Planning Tasmania will be celebrating its 45th birthday with a series of community events around the state.
Family Planning Tasmania was established in 1973 with one employee providing medical and educational services, today Family Planning Tasmania has over 50 employees working around the state deliver sexual and reproductive clinical and educational services to the Tasmanian public.
To celebrate our birthday and to recognise the difference that our service has made over the years, we will be holding celebrations at each of our clinics in Glenorchy, Launceston, and Burnie over the coming months. We will showcase the stories that have been sent in from the public about services and assistance that they have received from Family Planning Tasmania throughout our history.
CEO of Family Planning Tasmania, Cedric Manen, is urging the community to have open and honest conversations about sexual and reproductive health, and to de-stigmatise topics like STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) testing, contraceptive choices and termination of pregnancy.
Mr. Manen said that the response to the callout for stories about the service had been heartening, stating:
“It has been wonderful to read the first-hand accounts of the many different ways that Family Planning has helped Tasmanians over the years, from memorable sessions in schools to much-needed support during a difficult time – it’s clear that Family Planning Tasmania’s work has positively impacted people and families for over three generations”.
On Wednesday the 18th, Family Planning Tasmania will be unveiling a plaque and naming their meeting room in honour of Dr. Jannette Hatwell, one of the pioneers of Family Planning Tasmania.
