AEU welcomes TASC response to independent audit on exam marking

Posted on

The AEU Senior Colleges Committee of Management (SCCOM) has today welcomed the Office of Tasmanian Assessment, Standards and Certification (TASC)’s response to the independent audit of their external assessment processes.
AEU members called for an external review into TASC’s external assessment processes after changes to recruitment processes triggered an exam marking crisis in November last year.
After months of political pressure and a combined effort from the AEU and Independent Education Union, an independent review of the exam processes from last year has finally been undertaken and completed.
The move to take on board all 24 recommendations shows good faith from TASC, says AEU Deputy President, Peta-Maree Revell-Cook.
“One of the positive results of this review is regular monthly meetings being scheduled between TASC and the AEU to hold open dialogue around concerns and issues arising in the Years 11/12 sector,” said Ms Revell-Cook.
“We are seeking more streamlined approaches to applying and being accepted to mark exams and a change to marking loads and pay rates for markers. This was one of the many concerning issues the AEU had continually raised last year with the Minister’s Office.
“It is great to see students as the centre of this review and we are hoping a more streamlined process this year will help alleviate all of the concerns teachers, students and parents had heading into exams late last year.
“The AEU looks forward to developing a more consultative partnership with TASC during the remainder of the year and into the future.”
