Forward Mining iron ore project welcomed
• Federal environmental approval means jobs and economic boost for North West
• Strict and extensive environmental conditions important for Tasmania
Braddon Labor MPs Shane Broad and Anita Dow have applauded the move today to grant approval to Forward Mining’s Rogetta project with strict environmental conditions.
“This is a project that will create hundreds of jobs in the construction phase and permanent positions once this iron ore mine project is up and running,” Dr Broad said.
“It will increase volumes through the port and provide a significant economic boom to the North West with Forward Mining indicating it will spend up to $100 million a year to develop and maintain the mine.”
Ms Dow said the fact that the mine would go ahead with strict and wide-ranging environmental conditions was to be applauded.
“These conditions will protect threatened species, including the Tasmanian devil and, importantly, specifies that financial support will be given to the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program as well as the Tasmanian Land Conservancy,” Ms Dow said.
“It’s imperative Tasmania and the North West’s unique and sensitive environment is recognised, taken into account and afforded every protection in any new major development.”
