Commonwealth commitment to Antarctic science welcomed
The Tasmanian Government welcomes the Commonwealth Government’s announcement of the establishment of the new Australian Antarctic Science Council and its commitment to invest more than $100 million over the next 10 years in Antarctic science.
Today’s announcement compliments the Hodgman Liberal Government’s Tasmanian Antarctic Gateway Strategy and will cement Hobart as an Antarctic science hub and the premier gateway to Antarctica.
At present, Antarctic research is extremely valuable to the economy with over 1,200 Tasmanians directly and indirectly employed, injecting some $180 million into the local economy each year.
The Hodgman Liberal Government understands the sector has the potential to grow and create even more jobs for Tasmanians.
We look forward to working with the Commonwealth to continue to grow this important field of scientific endeavour.
