The Briefing … No live export ban

The federal government has fallen short of banning live sheep exports, instead introducing higher standards for export ships and harsher penalties on companies that breach them.

Ships will be required to improve ventilation and reduce sheep stocking densities by up to 30 per cent in summer, with company directors facing up to 10 years in prison or $2.1 million in fines if their firm breaks the rules. Speaking yesterday, agriculture minister David Littleproud said the reforms, which would “be implemented immediately”, amounted to “serious and meaningful change to the industry”
