The Briefing … Citizenship crisis continues, endlessly

Four federal lower house MPs have resigned after the High Court ruled Labor senator Katy Gallagher was ineligible for office on citizenship grounds.

In its ruling yesterday, the court found Gallagher’s defence that she had taken “reasonable steps” to renounce her British citizenship before nominations closed for the 2016 federal election was insufficient.

Labor MPs Justine Keay, Susan Lamb and Josh Wilson, as well as the Rebekha Sharkie of the Centre Alliance party, formerly the Nick Xenophon Team, resigned following the decision, which impacted their own citizenship statuses …
