Jaensch’s Private Rental Incentives Put Renters at Risk
Minister Jaensch is showing his inexperience through his outrageously ill-considered Private Rental Incentive Scheme.
Landlords will be eligible so long as leases are due to expire before June 2019. Given very few leases are for longer than a year, many current Tasmanians renters will be put at risk of their lease not being renewed.
This policy was sold as one to put property not currently on the rental market, into the rental market. The eligibility criteria, however, far from delivers.
This appears to be a scheme designed to shift private rentals into affordable rentals – perhaps to make public housing waiting lists look better.
Minister Jaensch announced during the sitting of Parliament that the eligibility criteria had been released on the DHHS website. They had not.
The website simply read “Information on the eligibility will be provided in May as the program commences”.
Only today, after the first sitting of Parliament, did the Minister actually release the information – avoiding any further parliamentary scrutiny.
