Helen Garner is one of Australia’s most admired writers. Her books, such as Monkey Grip, The First Stone, Joe Cinque’s Consolation, The Spare Room and This House of Grief, have prompted conversations and debates that have continued, in some cases, across decades. Her essays and stories have been equally memorable, and equally acclaimed.

The Monthly has been proud to publish a rich collection of Garner’s work over many years, from film reviews to award-winning essays. We are delighted to announce that she returns to our pages this coming issue with the first instalment of a bi-monthly column, The Courts.

The justice system has, of course, been a lifetime obsession for Garner. Courts have provided subjects and stories tailor-made for her writing, and few authors have ever captured the drama within them with quite the same vitality, humanity and incisive honesty. The sketches and reflections in The Courts will be a wonderful addition to Garner’s body of work.

The May issue of The Monthly is on sale Monday, April 30.
