The Briefing … NT opened to fracking
Good morning, and welcome to The Briefing.
Land rights activists and environmental groups have reacted furiously after the Northern Territory government overturned a ban on fracking.
Speaking yesterday, NT chief minister Michael Gunner said “the risk from fracking can be reduced to an acceptable level” by following 135 recommendations made by an independent inquiry. About 700,000 square kilometres of the territory will be opened up to gas exploration, with exemptions for “national parks, conservation areas, Indigenous protected areas, towns, residential and strategic assets, and areas of high cultural, environmental or tourism value” …
