Countdown to National Volunteer Week
As we begin the countdown to National Volunteer Week, I’d like to take this opportunity to reflect on this year’s theme ‘Give a Little, Change a Lot’.
There are many ways to interpret these words, and when I read them I am reminded of a quote that says “We know only too well that what we are doing is nothing more than a drop in the ocean. But if that drop is not there, the ocean would be missing something” – Mother Teresa.
For those Tasmanians volunteering, sometimes it can feel like our contribution is no more than a drop in the ocean, particularly for causes that we are passionate about.
Yet whether someone is volunteering every now and then or dedicating many hours each week, the combined effort of each and every one of us is impactful.
So this year when we celebrate National Volunteer Week from 21 to 27 May, I look forward to talking with as many volunteers as I can.
As I listen to their stories and share in their passions I will remind them of the significance of their contribution. Regardless of whether they’re volunteering one hour a month, 15 hours a week or more, I’ll remind them that they are actually changing a lot, because without them our island community would indeed be missing something, just like the ocean Mother Teresa mentions.
Yours in volunteering,
