Call for public assistance in eagle shooting investigation

Posted on

The Minister for the Environment, Elise Archer has today called for public assistance in providing information relating to the fatal shooting of a Tasmanian Wedge Tailed Eagle in the State’s north.
“The shooting of this endangered eagle is a heinous act that deserves to be condemned,” Minister Archer said.
“Whoever is responsible needs to face the consequences of their actions, and I urge anyone with information to anonymously contact DPIPWE or Crime Stoppers to help identify those responsible.
“Acts like this are exactly why the Government committed last year to change the laws to strengthen penalties for those who deliberately kill threatened species in Tasmania.
“These changes will bring penalties more in line with community expectations and send a stronger message that this will not be tolerated in Tasmania, and the legislation will be reintroduced upon Parliament’s resumption.”
The proposed changes to the Threatened Species Protection Act 1995 will increase the penalties to a fine of up to $100,011 and a maximum custodial sentence of up to 12 months imprisonment.
The current maximum penalty is restricted to a fine of up to $15,900, with no possibility for a custodial sentence despite the seriousness of the offence.
Anyone with information can anonymously contact DPIPWE’s Wildlife Operations Branch on 0427 437 020 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
