The Briefing … Child refugee ordered to Australia

The federal court has ordered that a 10-year-old boy with suicidal tendencies be brought to Australia from Nauru for medical and psychological treatment.
The boy, represented in court by advocacy group the National Justice Project, has attempted suicide several times since arriving in Australia by boat in July 2013. Justice Nye Perram dismissed the Department of Home Affairs’ appeal to delay the hearing, saying “there is a significant risk the boy would not be alive by that hearing, and I am not prepared to run that risk”. Justice Perram also ruled that the boy be flown to Australia for surgery for a medical condition, rejecting the department’s assertion that health facilities on Nauru were adequate to treat his condition …
