Starting the conversation on reconciliation
The inaugural Conversations @ Macquarie Point (CAMP) for Reconciliation will be held on Wednesday and due to demand has been relocated to the Hobart Town Hall.
The Macquarie Point Development Corporation want to engage the community in an open and honest chat about reconciliation.
We know that reconciliation isn’t in words it’s in action but we want to start the conversation and see where it leads us. Because we believe that together anything is achievable.
Our first speaker is Dr. Greg Lehman, UTAS Aboriginal Research Fellow and Mona Partner in the Truth & Reconciliation Art Park.
Dr Lehman will be discussing, ‘Confronting Tasmania’s Dark Past: can art erase a stubborn stain?’
Dr Greg Lehman is a regular contributor to the public discussions on Australian history and identity, especially in relation to the continuing culture of Aboriginal people in Tasmania and the violence associated with British colonisation.
A Research Fellow at the University of Tasmania, Greg recently completed a PhD at the University of Tasmania, focusing on the visual history of Aboriginal Tasmania, and was consultant curator for the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery’s new permanent Indigenous exhibition First Tasmanians, which opened last year.
A founding member of the National Museum of Australia’s Indigenous Reference Group, Greg is currently developing a major touring exhibition, The National Picture: Art of Tasmania’s Black War for the National Gallery of Australia, and his libretto for the oratorio A Tasmanian Requiem will premier at Hobart’s Theatre Royal in April this year.
In 2017, Greg worked with Mona on a new vision for Macquarie Point, proposing a Truth and Reconciliation Art Park to acknowledge Tasmania’s frontier conflict, and to celebrate Aboriginal survival. He continues to support the Macquarie Point Development Corporation in progressing this vision.
Bring your lunch, an open mind and a preparedness to embrace new ideas and challenging facts …
Date: Wednesday, March 21st, 1:00pm – 2:00pm.
