Roger’s first order of business should be to stop the secrecy

 Housing figures under Liberals have not been updated in six months
 Most recent figures show big increase in wait times
 New Minister’s first task is to tell Tasmanians the truth about extent of housing crisis
New Housing Minister Roger Jaensch should make his first order of business to tell Tasmanians on priority housing lists that they will potentially wait for more than 60 weeks for a roof over their heads.
Shadow Housing Minister Josh Willie said the actual numbers of Tasmanians caught up in the state’s housing affordability emergency were – typically – being kept under wraps, just as they had in the weeks leading up to the state election.
Mr Willie said the Liberal Government was deliberately keeping hidden the latest housing figures which have not been released since September.
“As Housing Minister Roger Jaensch should understand what he is walking into today and he should understand that Tasmanians caught up in the housing affordability and homelessness crisis need to know the truth,” Mr Willie said.
“That truth is the average time for priority housing applicants waiting for a house is rapidly increasing – from 43 weeks last March to 60 weeks in September.
“Updated figures have not been released since then and the only conclusion that can be reached is that the Liberals want to hide bad news.
“Figures from the December quarter are now well overdue and updates for this latest quarter have not seen the light of day.
“There is a clear trend here and it’s not good enough that the Liberals have not only comprehensively failed some of the most vulnerable Tasmanians but they want to keep the evidence hidden.
“Mr Jaensch has an opportunity to end this unacceptable culture and, if he fails to do that, Tasmanians will understand that the desperate secrecy and deception is going to continue.”
