Our Community Conversations Forum is on Wednesday 28 March from 10am until 3.30pm on the first floor, KGV Sports and Community Centre, Glenorchy.
The forum is for older people, their families and carers and topics will include the decision to stay in your home, downsize or move elsewhere, services and supports available, legal matters, health and in-home modifications.
The forum is hosted by the Linkages Network and sponsored by the Commonwealth Bank, Glenorchy. Linkages is a network convened by Glenorchy City Council of services for older people and disability support organisations.
Over 17 service providers and older members of the community have provided support and input into development of the forum.
A panel of community members who have had to make choices regarding where they should live, along with professionals working in several sectors will present their views on the choice to stay in your own home or move into retirement or assisted living. The rest of the day will consist of shorter information sessions on topics that are important to older people.
Many community groups will be attending to provide information including Legal Aid, Palliative Care Tasmania, Migrant Resource Centre, Glenorchy LINC, Advocacy Tasmania and many more.
Glenorchy City Council Mayor Kristie Johnston said the forum idea was formed after aged care client feedback showed people were confused about how and who they could access for help, particularly regarding housing and support options.
“I will be very interested to hear the range of topics on offer and am also looking forward to hearing feedback from participants on the day. This is an important day bringing together services into one place where our older members of the community can really take their time to find out some valuable information and then put into place those options they wish to pursue,” she said.
“It is very complex to determine where to go when a person starts to need help in their home and they need to make decisions on their future so if we can help our community members make that journey easier and more accessible, I feel we, as a council and service providers, are assisting in that sometimes very emotional journey.
