… CUTS $11 MILLION FROM TASMANIAN HOSPITALS

Launceston General Hospital losing its Emergency Medicine training accreditation is the latest example of the pressure that Tasmanian hospitals are facing under the Turnbull and Hodgman Liberal governments.

Over the next four years, the Turnbull government will invest $11 million less in Tasmanian hospitals than Labor has committed.

The LGH alone will have $1.95 million less to invest in surgeries, nurses and doctor numbers.

“Chronic under-investment by the Liberal Turnbull and Hodgman governments is making it difficult to recruit doctors and specialists to Tasmanian hospitals,” said Brian Mitchell, the federal member for Lyons.

“Instead of fixing our hospitals, Malcolm Turnbull is fixated on giving a $65 billion hand-out to corporations and banks,” said Mr Mitchell.

Under the Liberals, every public hospital in Tasmania is worse off than under Labor:

• Launceston General Hospital – $1.95 million
• North West Regional Hospital – $730,000
• Royal Hobart Hospital – $3.07 million

“This $11 million cut to Tasmanian hospitals puts doctors and nurses under enormous pressure and exposes them to stress and fatigue — and that makes it harder to recruit the required number of specialists to meet accreditation standards,” said Mr Mitchell.

“Only Labor is committed to fixing our hospitals – we know that Tasmanians’ health is a much bigger priority than giving away $65 billion to corporations and banks.”
