“In greater peril than ever before, takayna / Tarkine will be the muse for 140 artists heading into its remote reaches next weekend. After the Tasmanian state election returned the Liberal government, the Tarkine’s rainforests, wildlife and Aboriginal heritage coastline are more threatened than ever before,” Bob Brown Foundation Campaign Manager, Jenny Weber said.
“Will Hodgman’s Liberal government made shocking moves in their previous four years of government, pushing to open the remote coastal region with some of Australia’s richest Aboriginal heritage coastline to off-road vehicle damage, opening existing rainforest reserves to logging and entrenching destruction of native forests that are critical habitat to rare and endangered wildlife,” Jenny Weber said.
Tarkine in Motion is a project organised by the Bob Brown Foundation, with artists hosted in base camps around takayna / Tarkine where they will create art for our campaign calling for preservation of the Tarkine.
“Tarkine in Motion is more than a representation of the Tarkine’s inspiration. It is a call for all of us to get involved in ending the needless mining, logging and off-road vehicle erosion of the Tarkine wilderness,” Bob Brown said.
“In its fourth year, Tarkine in Motion has grown to be one of Australia’s biggest environmental arts projects. We are using the creative power of art to alert the world to the plight of this threatened wild place. For three days artists and volunteers will operate out of ten base camps located across the 495 000 hectares of takayna / Tarkine. From the small shack town of Arthur River, Corinna on the stunning Pieman River, the remote threatened coastal stretch between Sandy Cape and Rupert Point and in threatened ancient rainforests scheduled for imminent logging,” Jenny Weber said.
This year we are hosting more artists from all over Australia and all over Tasmania. This arts project is fully funded by the community through a crowd-funding campaign we are currently coordinating through Pozible, an online fundraising webpage. Our fundraising campaign has a stunning range of examples of how Tarkine in Motion captures the beauty of takayna / Tarkine. Our short film has breathtaking footage of the Tarkine and the rewards offered include many artworks that were created in last year’s project,” Jenny Weber said.
